We publish twice a year: Summer and Winter. We prefer submissions during the periods of January 1 to March 31 for the Summer issue, and
July 1 to September 30 for the Winter issue.
We accept essays and fiction concerning disability by two groups: individuals with a disability and those who are part of the disability community, such as a family member, caregiver, special educator, etc.
Although the majority of our published submissions are by adults, we try to include a piece or two in each issue by a child with a disability. Even better if it's handwritten and can be scanned and emailed or mailed. Children's submissions do not need to be Pulitzer Prize-ready or have a disability-related theme.
Word limit is 6,000, but we will consider a longer piece.
We will consider previously published work, and simultaneous submissions are fine as long as you keep us informed of the publication status.
In your cover letter, please include your name, address, email, disability, or your connection to the disability community, and a brief bio written in the third-person, eighty-five (85) words or less. In the bio, briefly list publications, other credits, and awards, if applicable. Please also state your disability or your connection to the community.
On the submission itself, please include the author’s name as a header on each page. We require that uploaded submissions be saved as Microsoft Word (.doc) or (.docx) files, single-spaced, and in a 12-point font such as Times, Times New Roman, or Courier.

We prefer submissions via our electronic submission system, but we accept mailed submissions. Mailed submissions should be typed, double-spaced, and font should be 12-point (Times, Times New Roman, or Courier). If you would like your mailed submission returned, please supply a self-addressed stamped envelope.
Please address your mailed submission to:

We will try and respond within 4 – 6 months, but it may take longer. Send an email query to email@example.com if you have not heard from us after six months.
Accepted submissions may be edited with approval of the author.
We pay $25 – $250 for a published submission, and payment is determined by length and quality. Payment for previously published work will be reduced. We purchase First Serial Rights. Copyright remains with the author. The author will have the authority to have the work reprinted elsewhere after it has appeared in Pentimento as long as Pentimento is credited with first publication in the reprint. A contract will be sent upon acceptance.
Thank you for your interest in Pentimento.
